BBQHWY Triple Play
Saturday, April 12th I traveled the #BBQHWY to Greenville and Ayden NC hitting a BBQ Triple Play. I visited B’s Barbecue in Greenville, NC then traveled 10 miles south to try Bum’s and Skylight Inn in Ayden. All three are legendary BBQ joints in Eastern NC and none disappointed. I had at least a BBQ sandwich and a pound to go from each.
B’s Barbecue at 10:00 a.m on that Saturday already had 10 people in line at the outside window and 6 inside. Smoke was pouring out of the cooking building and the ladies were serving up their BBQ and Chicken faster than you could believe and never missed a beat or an order. The BBQ was smoked just enough and slightly sweet vinegar based sauce was as wonderful as was the slaw. The skin on the chicken was as a friend of mine is fond of saying “would make you want to eat your lips off”.
Bum’s is located in a storefront in downtown Ayden, across from the police dept. You go through a serving line and BBQ, chicken and vegetables all looked great. Just couldn’t fully re-load again! Bum’s was a little heavier smoked than B’s, but not too heavy. It was a great sandwich and the bbq later was still just as flavorful.
I came out of Bum’s and needed directions to find the Skylight Inn BBQ. The Ayden police just across the street gave directions and only about a mile down the road. It was 11:00 a.m. there and there was a line already in the place. The BBQ is served up from an old style chopping bowl behind the counter and you could see the wood pile out back. The Skylight Inn sandwich was good as well, with a little bark in the mix to add a little flavor.
These three BBQ joints had been on my list to try for quite a while, the 90 mile trip down #BBQHWY was well worth on a pretty Spring Saturday. B’s, Bums and and Skylight Inn, a solid triple play on the BBQHWY!
